In the stir of enormous budget cuts to public schools statewide, and with the Florida Legislature in view of larger reductions for next year’s 2008-2009 school year, this year’s summer school program will be extremely limited. According to Vice Principal Raymond Peatrice, “The upcoming summer school program will be limited to only seniors who have failed English 4, Economics or Government. The summer school program would also be for juniors who are advancing to twelfth grade but who are a credit behind in a Math or English class.” Summer school will not be available for sophomores and freshman at Miami Beach Senior High. According to counselor Mrs. Nunez, “the adult education at Nautilus may be offering English 1, 2, Algebra 1, Geometry, World History American History, Earth Space Science, Biology and Physical Science; during their summer trimester”. When asked how these changes to the summer school program can be a benefit or disadvantage to a potentially failing student, Peatrice stated, “If a student is failing more than one class then the student will not be able to advance to the next grade level”.
